My name is Amalia Versaci and I am an artist and designer. I studied photography and printmaking at Rhode Island School of Design, but I am a lover of almost all media and love trying new ways to create. I am particularly interested in incorporating what some might consider ‘unconventional’ material into my work and always find it very exciting when I achieve this successfully.

I believe my constant searching for, and brainstorming about new materials is what led to my current love of zippers. I know that I am not the first or only artist to use zippers in their work, so surely I cannot be credited with the idea. I do, however, feel that my work has it’s own unique point of view and that many of my designs are quite innovative and original. I also believe my work with vintage zippers, and my efforts to incorporate the historical context of each zipper into my pieces, adds an extra dimension that has not yet been explored by other zipper artists.

I enjoy every aspect of creating with zippers: the constant searching for vintage zippers, finding matching slides among hundreds, discovering zippers that are very old and researching to find out their age and what they may have been used for, coming up with new ways to use every single part of each zipper, etc... I am very passionate about art, collecting, and history, so I feel very fortunate to have found a creative outlet that incorporates all of these aspects of my personality.

I honestly don’t know where my journey with zippers will lead me, but I am sure that I will eventually branch out into new creative territories. I would hate to feel limited or bored by being forced to use one type of material for all of my work. At the moment, however, I still find zippers to be a very exciting medium and that I have a ways to go before I lose interest in learning about them and finding new ways to use them creatively. The fact that I am lucky enough to have others take interest in my work also helps drive me to continue making new things, and for that I extremely grateful.

Thank you for visiting my site and taking the time to find out more about my work. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy making it!
